We are delighted that NUVIA has been awarded a project for waste characterization automation at Doel NPP in Belgium.

NUVIA has been awarded a project for waste characterization automation at Doel NPP in Belgium.

The project consists in automating the radiological characterization of treated and untreated nuclear waste from NPP Doel coming in different types of drums.

This is a measurement that combines several methods – gamma spectrometric characterization using HPGe detectors, 1 meter and contact dose rate measurement for 100% of the drum surface, surface contamination test performed by wiping pre-defined areas followed by activity analysis of used wipes.

All processes are fully automated in terms of mechanical manipulation and measurement, leaving only supervision tasks on personnel and avoiding dose intake for the site workforce.

This custom-designed solution leverages NUVIA’s unique set of competencies and experiences in nuclear measurement from NUVIATech Instruments and in automation from NUVIA Automation department in the Czech Republic, combined with local understanding of Electrabel ‘s local challenges through our recently established Belgian entity.
