NUVIA is the UK’s leading provider of radiation protection services. For more than a decade we have defined what high‑quality radiation protection training looks like, developing, supporting and supplying the specialists who keep nuclear operations safe, compliant and efficient across the civil sector and more recently, defence sites.

Developing the UK’s future radiation protection workforce is central to our mission. We have a proven track record of training both our own NUVIA teams and those from key partner organisations, such as NRS Dounreay, EDF and, more recently, UKNNL. Demand for our programmes continues to grow, as the number of professionals achieving the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Radiation Protection doubled from 2024 to 2025, demonstrating both industry need and confidence in our training.

NUVIA is a fully approved centre for the following QCF qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 2 Radiation Protection
  • NVQ Level 3 Radiation Protection
  • NVQ Level 2 Decommissioning Operations
  • NVQ Level 3 Decommissioning Operations

Our training expertise comes directly from real operational experience. With more than 300 radiation protection specialists deployed across the UK, supporting high‑hazard decommissioning, reactor outages, emergency monitoring systems, contamination control, dosimetry and calibration, we understand exactly what skills nuclear sites need. That real‑world insight underpins every course we deliver, ensuring that our training remains practical, relevant and aligned to the realities of modern nuclear operations.

Our training pathway is designed to create competent professionals quickly and safely. Trainees begin with a 2.5‑week classroom course built around two updated core modules: Fundamentals of Health Physics & Radiological Monitoring and Foundations of Health Physics & Radiation Protection. These are delivered alongside practical exercises using our purpose‑built facilities, including our recently added “Freddy” mannequin, which allows trainees to develop monitoring skills in a realistic yet controlled environment before transitioning to live sites.

From there, trainees move into structured, mentored placements on operational nuclear facilities. Most achieve site authorisation for low‑risk activities within three months and progress to higher‑risk tasks within a year. Their NVQ is completed through written assessments, evidence portfolios and live on‑site observations by NUVIA assessors. Because our assessors work directly within the nuclear environment, trainees gain exposure to real tasks, real standards and real operational pressures, something general training providers simply cannot replicate.

Looking ahead, we are expanding our development pathways further, including structured routes for aspiring Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs). Our growing RPA team already delivers RPS training, refresher courses and bespoke programmes tailored to client needs, while actively mentoring the next generation of Radiation Protection Engineers.

As the nuclear sector continues to grow and invest in new facilities, the need for highly skilled radiation protection professionals will continue to increase. NUVIA is ready to meet that challenge. With proven training pathways, experienced teams and a long-standing reputation for quality, we remain at the forefront of developing the UK’s future radiation protection workforce.

We’re not just delivering Health Physics training. We’re setting the standard and shaping the future of the industry.

If you, or someone you know, would be interested in joining the next generation of radiation protection professionals, we’d love to hear from you.
