NUVIA has been selected by ONDRAF L’Organisme national des déchets radioactifs et des matières fissiles enrichies, with the support of Tractebel, to dismantle the activated concrete structures of the former Best Medical site in Belgium.
This exciting project marks a major milestone in our Belgian operations and showcases our specialized expertise in nuclear facility dismantling and environmental remediation. After the closure of Best Medical Belgium SA (BMB) in 2012, ONDRAF-NIRAS was tasked with decontaminating and dismantling the site’s nuclear installations. Three buildings have since been returned to the National Institute for Radioelements (IRE), while the fourth building (B14), containing two cyclotrons and heavily contaminated zones, is planned to be fully decommissioned by 2031.
NUVIA will play a key role in the final decommissioning by cutting the activated concrete structure, consisting of the safe removal of 2,000 tonnes of concrete and steel. Our experienced teams will approach this work sustainably by carefully separating materials and maximizing reuse, ensuring that only what is strictly necessary is treated as radioactive waste. With decades of proven success in complex decommissioning projects across Europe, we are fully committed to delivering the highest safety standards, regulatory compliance, and sustainable practices. This contract not only strengthens our position as a trusted partner in the Benelux region but also allows us to contribute meaningfully to Belgium’s efforts in managing its legacy nuclear facilities.
