NUVIA operates on key national defence sites in the United Kingdom, France, and other regions, supporting major governmental organizations, including missions related to homeland nuclear safety. Our expertise in nuclear engineering, specialist maintenance, fuel supply, radioactive waste management, and decommissioning is highly valued by military sectors, particularly in the management of nuclear-powered submarines.

Delivering complex nuclear infrastructure
With over 60 years of experience, NUVIA is an integral name in the history of nuclear energy, both in France, the United Kingdom, and internationally. From the construction of the first nuclear power plants in France and the UK to our strategic contributions to today’s most ambitious global projects, such as ITER, NUVIA has consistently demonstrated its unique expertise in the nuclear sector. Today, we continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of energy worldwide.
Combined role in submarine decommissioning
NUVIA and VINCI Construction’s involvement in submarine decommissioning extends across both the UK and France, contributing to complex, high-profile projects.
In the UK:
- Submarine Dismantling Project (SDP): developing safe, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective solutions for defueling and disposing of nuclear-powered submarines; and also the design and creation of a transport and storage container for dismantled submarine reactor pressure vessels. This project played a vital role in the UK’s long-term nuclear submarine decommissioning efforts.
- Ministry of Defence’s comparative analysis of different storage and disposal options for decommissioned submarine components: assessing interim storage solutions for nuclear waste from decommissioned submarines, evaluating safety, costs, and environmental impact.
In France:
- Naval Group, along with Veolia and NEOM (a subsidiary of VINCI Construction France), manages the deconstruction of ex-SSBNs (submarine ballistic nuclear-powered submarines): Le Tonnant, which was decommissioned between September 2018 and February 2020, followed by L’Indomptable, March 2020 – August 2021, and then Le Foudroyant in September 2021.
- The French procurement agency entrusted Naval Group with the contract to deconstruct the hulls of these submarines, and the program will continue until 2026. The collaboration between Naval Group, Veolia, and NEOM showcases a partnership model for complex submarine decommissioning, demonstrating how companies like NUVIA, through its association with VINCI Construction, can play a critical role in supporting both operational and environmental challenges in nuclear submarine disposal.
NUVIA UK’s support to defence infrastructure
In the UK, NUVIA continues to solidify its position as a key player in defence nuclear. In 2020, the company was awarded a place on the Ministry of Defence’s Nuclear Technical Support Provider (NTSP) framework. This seven-year framework supports critical infrastructure projects, particularly at HMNB Clyde including refurbishment and upgrades of key naval assets.
NUVIA’s global contributions to nuclear safety
NUVIA’s influence extends beyond the UK and France, as evidenced by its involvement in the Global Threat Reduction Programme. NUVIA supported international nuclear safety and non-proliferation efforts. NUVIA’s efforts here underline its global leadership in nuclear risk management and legacy clean-up.
