Dans tout environnement o\u00f9 des rayonnements ionisants sont pr\u00e9sents, la mesure est essentielle.<\/p>\n

Des installations nucl\u00e9aires aux \u00e9tablissements de sant\u00e9, en passant par les laboratoires de recherche, les instruments de radioprotection sont utilis\u00e9s chaque jour, souvent sans que leur fiabilit\u00e9 soit remise en question. Une mesure est v\u00e9rifi\u00e9e, un seuil est confirm\u00e9, et le travail se poursuit. En toute discr\u00e9tion, ces appareils influencent des d\u00e9cisions qui ont un impact direct sur la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des personnes et le bon d\u00e9roulement des op\u00e9rations.<\/p>\n

Mais que se passe-t-il lorsque cette mesure est erron\u00e9e ?<\/p>\n

  • Pas de mani\u00e8re spectaculaire<\/li>\n
  • Pas parce que l\u2019appareil est manifestement d\u00e9fectueux<\/li>\n
  • Mais simplement parce qu\u2019il est l\u00e9g\u00e8rement d\u00e9r\u00e9gl\u00e9<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    C\u2019est l\u00e0 que r\u00e9side le v\u00e9ritable risque.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    L\u2019\u00e9talonnage est souvent per\u00e7u comme une exigence de routine : une op\u00e9ration planifi\u00e9e, un certificat \u00e0 renouveler ou une simple case \u00e0 cocher. En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, il constitue l\u2019un des contr\u00f4les les plus essentiels dans tout environnement radiologique.<\/p>\n

    En pratique, maintenir un parc d\u2019instruments correctement \u00e9talonn\u00e9s n\u2019est pas toujours simple, notamment sur les sites complexes o\u00f9 plusieurs \u00e9quipes se partagent les \u00e9quipements, o\u00f9 les appareils circulent entre diff\u00e9rentes zones, o\u00f9 des instruments de secours sont mis en service et o\u00f9 les syst\u00e8mes de suivi manuels peinent \u00e0 suivre le rythme. Avec le temps, certaines \u00e9ch\u00e9ances d\u2019\u00e9talonnage peuvent \u00eatre d\u00e9pass\u00e9es et les enregistrements devenir incomplets, r\u00e9duisant ainsi la visibilit\u00e9 et le contr\u00f4le.<\/p>\n

    Sans un \u00e9talonnage rigoureux, c\u2019est l\u2019int\u00e9grit\u00e9 de l\u2019ensemble du dispositif de radioprotection qui commence \u00e0 s\u2019affaiblir.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Le risque invisible<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>

    Un instrument non \u00e9talonn\u00e9 tombe rarement en panne de mani\u00e8re \u00e9vidente. Il continue de fonctionner et d\u2019afficher des mesures. Le probl\u00e8me est que ces mesures peuvent ne plus refl\u00e9ter la r\u00e9alit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

    Une l\u00e9g\u00e8re d\u00e9rive peut entra\u00eener :<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Une exposition aux rayonnements qui passe inaper\u00e7ue<\/li>\n
    • De fausses alertes perturbant les op\u00e9rations<\/li>\n
    • Une mauvaise \u00e9valuation des conditions de s\u00e9curit\u00e9<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Les cons\u00e9quences de ce type de d\u00e9faillance sont largement document\u00e9es.<\/p>\n

      Lors d\u2019un incident de radioth\u00e9rapie aux \u00c9tats-Unis (1974\u20131976), une unit\u00e9 de traitement au cobalt n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 correctement r\u00e9\u00e9talonn\u00e9e pendant pr\u00e8s de deux ans, ce qui a conduit \u00e0 l\u2019administration de surdoses importantes \u00e0 plus de 400 patients.<\/p>\n

      Au Costa Rica (1996), une erreur d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation lors du processus d\u2019\u00e9talonnage a entra\u00een\u00e9 un allongement des temps de traitement, provoquant des surdoses d\u2019environ 66 %.<\/p>\n

      Au Panama (2000), l\u2019absence de v\u00e9rification ind\u00e9pendante entre la dose calcul\u00e9e et la dose r\u00e9ellement mesur\u00e9e a conduit des patients \u00e0 recevoir le double de la dose de rayonnement pr\u00e9vue.<\/p>\n

      M\u00eame en dehors du contexte m\u00e9dical, les cons\u00e9quences peuvent \u00eatre critiques. Lors de la gestion de l\u2019accident de Tchernobyl (1986\u20131987), les syst\u00e8mes de dosim\u00e9trie \u00e9taient h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8nes et, dans certains cas, peu fiables, compliquant consid\u00e9rablement l\u2019\u00e9valuation pr\u00e9cise de l\u2019exposition des intervenants. Durant les premi\u00e8res phases de l\u2019accident, le manque de mesures fiables et les fortes incertitudes sur les d\u00e9bits de dose ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 \u00e0 quelle vitesse le contr\u00f4le peut \u00eatre perdu lorsque les syst\u00e8mes de mesure sont insuffisants ou ne sont pas pleinement fiables.<\/p>\n

      Il ne s\u2019agissait pas d\u2019un manque de connaissances. Il s\u2019agissait d\u2019\u00e9checs en mati\u00e8re de v\u00e9rification, de tra\u00e7abilit\u00e9 et de ma\u00eetrise des syst\u00e8mes.<\/p>\n

      Dans les environnements o\u00f9 la fiabilit\u00e9 est indispensable, \u00ab presque juste \u00bb ne suffit pas.<\/p>\n<\/div>

      Une exigence r\u00e9glementaire mondiale<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>

      L\u2019importance de l\u2019\u00e9talonnage est clairement reconnue par les cadres r\u00e9glementaires internationaux. Des organismes tels que l\u2019AIEA, le HSE britannique ou encore la CNEN au Br\u00e9sil exigent que les instruments de radioprotection soient \u00e9talonn\u00e9s r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement et que leur \u00e9talonnage soit tra\u00e7able \u00e0 des \u00e9talons reconnus.<\/p>\n

      Des r\u00e9glementations telles que le 10 CFR 20.1501<\/strong> formalisent cette exigence afin de garantir que les mesures utilis\u00e9es pour prot\u00e9ger les personnes et l\u2019environnement soient d\u00e9montr\u00e9es comme fiables.<\/p>\n

      Pourtant, malgr\u00e9 cette exigence clairement \u00e9tablie, les audits montrent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement que les d\u00e9faillances li\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9talonnage figurent parmi les non-conformit\u00e9s les plus fr\u00e9quentes dans le monde.<\/p>\n

      Ce constat met en \u00e9vidence un probl\u00e8me r\u00e9current : si l\u2019obligation est bien connue, la port\u00e9e et la complexit\u00e9 d\u2019un \u00e9talonnage r\u00e9alis\u00e9 dans les r\u00e8gles de l\u2019art sont souvent sous-estim\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<\/div>

      Ce que signifie r\u00e9ellement un \u00e9talonnage fiable<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>

      L\u2019\u00e9talonnage ne consiste pas simplement \u00e0 ajuster un appareil. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un processus ma\u00eetris\u00e9 et tra\u00e7able qui permet de garantir la confiance dans les mesures.<\/p>\n

      Un \u00e9talonnage fiable repose sur :<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Une tra\u00e7abilit\u00e9 vers des \u00e9talons nationaux ou internationaux (par exemple le NIST ou l\u2019UKAS)<\/li>\n
      • Des proc\u00e9dures sp\u00e9cifiques \u00e0 chaque type de d\u00e9tecteur, les diff\u00e9rentes technologies ne r\u00e9agissant pas de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re aux champs de rayonnement<\/li>\n
      • Une documentation compl\u00e8te pr\u00e9cisant les incertitudes de mesure, les conditions d\u2019essai et les limites d\u2019utilisation<\/li>\n
      • Une int\u00e9gration avec les op\u00e9rations de maintenance ou de r\u00e9paration afin de v\u00e9rifier les performances de l’appareil apr\u00e8s toute intervention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments sont indissociables. L\u2019\u00e9talonnage n\u2019est pas une op\u00e9ration isol\u00e9e : il s\u2019inscrit dans un syst\u00e8me global d’assurance de la qualit\u00e9 des mesures.<\/p>\n<\/div>

        Bien plus qu\u2019une obligation r\u00e9glementaire<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>

        Au final, l\u2019\u00e9talonnage ne consiste pas simplement \u00e0 respecter une exigence r\u00e9glementaire. Il vise \u00e0 garantir que chaque d\u00e9cision fond\u00e9e sur une mesure repose sur une donn\u00e9e fiable.<\/p>\n

        Car lorsqu\u2019un technicien consulte une valeur mesur\u00e9e, il part implicitement du principe :<\/p>\n

        Que cette valeur est digne de confiance.<\/p>\n

        Or cette confiance n\u2019est jamais acquise. Elle se construit gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des processus rigoureux, des contr\u00f4les r\u00e9guliers et des v\u00e9rifications syst\u00e9matiques.<\/p>\n

        Dans les environnements radiologiques, la diff\u00e9rence entre une situation s\u00fbre et une situation dangereuse n\u2019est pas toujours visible.<\/p>\n

        Elle ne peut \u00eatre mise en \u00e9vidence que par la
